The San Miguel Beermen (or officially known as San Miguel Beer-Philippines) is a new professional team that will play in the ASEAN Basketball League in the 2012 season which starts in January. The team is based in the Philippines with the team owned by San Miguel Corporation.
San Miguel is the second ABL team from the Philippines after the Philippine Patriots after officials from the company and the league announced its participation on July 6, 2011. The Beermen will play their home games at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Former seven-time Philippine Basketball Association Best Import Bobby Parks has been named as coach of the team. No lineup has been announced by the team.
San Miguel's basketball history can be traced back in the old Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association when it was known as the San Miguel Braves. In 1975, the company bolted out of the league to become of the one of the founding members of the PBA.
The team won a PBA-record 19 championships, including a grandslam in the 1989 season. San Miguel also carried the names of Royal Tru-Orange, Magnolia Ice Cream, Magnolia Beverage Masters and Petron Blaze Boosters. After the 2011 PBA Commissioner's Cup, the team replaced their team name to Petron, one of SMC's subsidiaries.
Among the big names that played for San Miguel were Manny Paner, Samboy Lim, Ramon Fernandez, Ato Agustin, Hector Calma, Allan Caidic, Danny Ildefonso, Danny Seigle and Dondon Honteviros.
